Esperance. The last civilizaton on the coast for over 1200km until Ceduna in South Australia. Esperance and Ceduna are at opposite ends of the Great Australian Bight. Esperance is a natural deep water harbour protected by an archpelago of offshore islands. The town while small exudes character and belief in itself.
The drive from Albany to Esperance is nearly 500km. Too far for a one day drive particularly when there are wildflowers reserves to explore.
Our route takes back past the Stirling Ranges.
The massive eastern wheatbelt region was Mallee forest like western Victoria. Just outside the small farming town of Ongerup we stumble upon the Australian Malleefowl Centre. Here we get to photograph the otherwise ellusive Malleefowl.
The region is basically wheat fields from horizon to horizon for hundreds of kilometres. The season has been exceptional and the prospects for harvesting a record crop are high.
We camp overnight at Jerramungup. A small switched on farming village. An island of civilization in an ocean of wheat fields.
After Jerramungup we begin to find more nature reserves to explore. Here in a recently burnt section native hibiscus have sprung up.
The bush is ablaze with colour...
Esperance port...
The public art in Esperance is wonderful...
Esperance Bay is protected by the islands from the ocean swells.
But just over the hill from the western end of Espeance Bay are amazing surfing breaks along about 10km of coast.
This coastline provided amazing opportunities for drone photography...
To the east of Esperence is Wylie Bay, again with incredible scenery...
Further east from Experance is the Cape LeGrand National Park. The sand is white, the water is turquoise and ocean swells are huge...
Over our 4 days in Esperance we found some flowers to photograph...
